How to buy a gift for a goth

Many people who aren’t into the aesthetic seem to struggle with finding a gift for the goths in their life. You’re not alone, it’s tricky to find the right gift based on something you don’t know the ins and outs of. This guide will demystify some of the common areas to help find the right goth gift for each individual.

Clothing

Clothing, as you can imagine, is pretty personal but also one of the easiest to narrow down since it’s probably something you see a lot of! Take note of whether your chosen goth wears any specific colours with their black. Many people will have a preferred accent colour, some use a lot of colours, and some wear black from head to toe.

Likewise, pay attention to the style. Do they wear long Victorian skirts and lots of lace? Perhaps they’re usually in band tees, jeans and a hoodie? This can direct you in knowing whether to check out t-shirts or riding coats! Look out for specific repeating themes or characters in their clothing and you’ll head in the right direction.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, don’t be afraid to go simple. Black strap tops and basics can be found pretty much everywhere and bonus points if it’s in a slightly unusual style. Likewise, a good quality cotton shirt is always useful if your goth is into a smart/formal look. If that’s still not a good fit for you, look for accessories, it is much harder to go wrong with those.

Accessories and jewellery

Bags – Goth prints and styles are easy to come by these days. You’ll have some clues from your clothing research in finding something inline with the style. Our batpack is one of our most popular items but we also love these picks:

Facemasks – This is a great little gift if the person uses them.

Scarves – an absolute failsafe gift, an unusual printed scarf is an appreciated addition to almost any wardrobe.

Hats – a little harder to get right but also a little harder to find as a goth so often goes down well!

Hair accessories – if your goth likes to wear hair clips, ponytails or slides this could be an interesting route to go. From patterned scrunchies to bat hair slides, there will be something fairly unique around and it’s unlikely your goth will be fully stocked in this area!

Jewellery – by far the best known goth brand is Alchemy Gothic. They make wonderful, high quality pewter jewellery although it can be a little large and extravagent for some. Try to find pictures of the actual size of the piece to see if it fits in with your goth’s style before purchasing. If you’re not sure, the stud earrings are very low key and cute!

Socks – you can never have enough socks and frankly, they don’t come along in ‘goth’ as often as we’d like. Ankle socks, bat prints, or just good quality tights and fishnets can all go down well.

Homeware

Cushions can be a fun addition if you’re comfortable buying within your goth’s style range. They come in all sorts of fun shapes and prints that you simply don’t find on the high street all that often.

For something a little less personal (and more likely to be a hit regardless!) soft blankets and throws are a winner. Look for dark colours and goth-style prints.

Mugs are also a fairly safe bet. Nice artwork prints, slogans or unusual shapes are very giftable.

Candle holders & ornaments can seem tricky to get right but there are some excellent ‘generic yet impressive’ options.

Towels is one product we’ve recently come across and realised we almost never see in goth! Sure you get the odd skully beach towel but there are also nice cotton goth towels out there and how many of those have you seen in the wild?

Other giftables

Toys and games can again be specific. There are huge ranges of toys and games your goth could be into, or not. These are difficult to buy for unless you can find out information about what they like and what they already have. If you think you can find out the info, go for it. It will be appreciated. If not, check out plushies, there are some really cute little giftable cuddlers around.

Stationery is another safe bet. Notebooks, pens and inks are a staple for many goths and we don’t always have style-appropriate items. If you want something a little more new and unusual and your goth is a little crafty think nice inks, pens that work on black paper and a black notebook or wax seals.
