Can you wear pink and be a goth?

I see a lot of people stressing on social media about not being able to be a goth because they like pink. As someone running a goth shop and living in a pastel nightmare I’m here to tell you it’s A-Okay. And B-not that uncommon.

In my youth I found myself frequently surrounded by goth wizards – dressed to the nines in black lace and metal with perfect hair and immaculately flicked eyeliner (how do they do that?) – … dancing away to Barbie Girl. I discovered they like:

  • Aqua
  • Cute things
  • Not judging people based on what they wear

They would not have batted an eyelid at someone wearing pink. And that was in a time when we saw pink as the devil’s work – something to do with stereotypes and unfair expectations of normality. Nowadays I see approximately 112 goth-to-their-core humans per day pulling off amazing outfits in a beautiful mix of full pastels and pastel-and-black. It’s completely, overwhelmingly normal.

Many of the big brands are embracing this:

Cupcake Cult is cuter than ever
Iron Fist made these adorable batwing shoes two years ago and I’m sad they’re now sold out

The point is even brands that lead the style are totally cool with it. There are entire subsets of goths dedicated to the look too; Pastel goth and kawaii goth come to mind. But you don’t actually have to goth up your pink. It’s totally okay to dress different, explore other themes and mix and match. No one is going to come and remove your goth badge, promise.
